Women’s Volleyball Team Competes at OCAA Championship

February 25, 2009

Loyalist Women’s Volleyball Team Competes at Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) Volleyball Championship

The Loyalist women’s volleyball team is one of four that will compete for the provincial crown at the 2009 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) volleyball championship. The much-anticipated event will take place at Durham College from February 27 to 28, 2009 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

The event will showcase outstanding volleyball action, as the top four men’s and women’s teams from across the province strive for the provincial title and a bid for the National Championships.

“We are thrilled to be competing against Ontario’s top volleyball teams”, said Athletic Director Greg Gavin.  “This team has shown a phenomenal ability to dig in and pull together as the competition level heightens. This strength, combined with their exceptional volleyball skills, will serve them well as they fight for the provincial title and a trip to the nationals. Previously, the top eight teams competed in this championship but this has been reduced to only the top four. When a college the size of Loyalist places in the top four against huge urban colleges like these, that is a major victory in itself.”

The championship will kick off on Thursday, February 26 with the OCAA Championship and Awards Banquet in Oshawa. Athletes, teams, and coaches will take home honours for their accomplishments throughout the regular season. At the banquet, Loyalist Lancers Amy Hoskin and Mandi Buma will be recognized as OCAA League All Stars. In addition, Coach Tony Clarke has been selected as the Eastern Conference Coach of the Year.

The four semi-final match-ups will take place on Friday, February 27 beginning at noon as the Lancers match up against Humber College. Saturday, February 28 will feature the medal round beginning at noon, with the women’s gold medal game taking place at 5:30 p.m.

For volleyball fans who cannot make it out to the event, games will be available to watch online at http://www.sportslive.ca/.
