Lifelong Learning Leads to Dream Job at Kellogg's Plant in Belleville

As the Facilities Manager at Kellogg's Belleville plant, Todd Armstrong is responsible for making sure the manufacturing operation is as environmentally friendly as possible, from the production machines to the staff cafeteria. He ensures emissions, water usage and the amount of waste being removed from the plant is minimal.
"The sustainability mandate of my job is all about using the least amount of gas, electricity and water to make the most products while also not harming the environment," says Todd.

BMO PLEDGES $50,000 TO CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Loyalist graduate Lloyd Fleming, Vice-President, BMO Bank of Montreal, Central and Northern Ontario District (right) and Bob LaFrance, Commercial Banking, Area Manager, BMO Bank of Montreal, Central and Northern Ontario District (left), presented Loyalist College with a cheque for $50,000 from BMO Financial Group. The donation will go toward the College's $6 million Campaign fundraising goal, including $5 million to complete and equip the Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre, and $1 million in endowment and awards in support of student financial assistance. The presentation was made to fellow Loyalist graduate College President Maureen Piercy, College Board Chair Stuart Wright (centre) and Campaign Co-Chair Bernie Ouellet. LOYALIST GRAD WRITES NEW BOOK
Rob Tripp, a graduate of the 1983 Radio Broadcasting program, has released his new book "Without Honour: The True Story of the Shafia Family and the Kingston Canal Murders." Since graduating from Loyalist, Rob has worked in radio, television and print journalism, including a position at the Kingston Whig Standard where he spent 20 years as a city hall reporter, crime reporter and city editor. LOYALIST HOSTS FALL OPEN HOUSE
The College hosted prospective students and members of the community at the annual Fall Open House on Tuesday, October 30th. Visitors were invited to participate in campus and residence tours, attend information sessions, meet with faculty and students, explore funding options, and learn about student success services. |
OVER $21,000 RAISED IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED WAY OF QUINTE
Given all of the initiatives and outreach conducted by Loyalist faculty, staff and students, Loyalist has already raised $21,000 in support of the United Way of Quinte. |
POLICE FOUNDATIONS STUDENTS RAISED $2000 FOR UNITED WAY OF QUINTE Over 30 students participated in the Annual Police Foundations Run on Friday, November 2nd, which raised $2,000 for the United Way of Quinte. Thank you to Professor Larry Cook and second-year Police Foundations student Jessica McMurter who organized the event, as well as to the Nutrition House for providing prizes. |
UNITED WAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST RAISES $1,300
The United Way of Quinte campaign at Loyalist kicked-off with a pancake breakfast for staff and students on Thursday, October 11th. Thanks to generous donations from Bib's Meats, Findlay Foods, Reid's Dairy, Club 213 and Aramark, $1,300 was raised. |
CAMPUS TRUCKLOAD SALE RAISES $15,386 FOR UNITED WAY

COLLEGE WELCOMES HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR EVA OLSSON
On October 16th, Ms. Olsson spoke to students in the Loyalist College gym about bullying and the importance of not being a bystander to injustice. She used her life experiences, primarily during the Holocaust, to illustrate the power of hate and the importance of standing up against forces of racism, bigotry and intolerance. NEW WELDING AND FABRICATION TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
Starting in September 2013, the College will be offering a two-year, four semester Welding and Fabrication Technician program for an Ontario College diploma. Building on the popularity of the current one-year Welding Techniques Ontario College Certificate, Loyalist's new program provides in-depth education in the demanding fields of welding and fabrication. COLLEGE HOSTS ANNUAL TRADEWISE EVENT
To build awareness of the career opportunities available for women in skilled trades, the College hosted the third annual Tradewise event October 24th. Fifty-five girls in grades nine and ten, representing 11 schools, experienced the post-secondary options available to them through a number of fun activities. Participating programs included: Culinary, Automotive, Manufacturing, Welding, Electrical, Surveying, Esthetics,

BUILDING A BETTER LIFE
Students in the one-year International Support Worker Post-Graduate Certificate program at Loyalist College will spend four weeks in Chiapas, Mexico this winter learning about relief and sustainable development. The professor-led placement builds on lessons from first semester, ranging from international development strategies to global concerns about literacy, poverty, health, employment, conflicts and the environment. CROWN WARD CONFERENCE PROMOTES POST-SECONDARY OPTIONS
In support of Child Abuse Prevention Month and Foster Parent Appreciation Week in Ontario, Loyalist College was pleased to host the Crown Ward Education Championship Conference on October 26th. The theme of the event, Dare...Dream...Do...Exploring Options for Post-Secondary Education, focused on assisting youth in care to discover the possibilities available to them through higher education. CULINARY MANAGEMENT STUDENTS SHINE
Culinary Management students Geoff Kirkland, Tyanne Sim, and Mackenzie Kozads, competed and received second place honorable mention in Taste Canada's Cook the Books competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on Sunday, November 4th. The students were given 30 minutes to cook and present "Chili Mignon," a recipe from Tina Roberts' book The Two Sisters Cookbook - 20 Family Inspired Recipes.
