Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/April 29, 2015 – Immunizations are safe and they work. April 25th to May 2nd is National Immunization Awareness Week. Hastings Prince Edward Public Health would like to remind residents of all ages to make sure their immunizations are up-to-date.
“From tetanus to measles, be sure to boost your immune system with updated vaccinations,” says Bill Sherlock, Program Manager with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health, “The recent measles activity highlights the need for the public to ensure all immunizations are up-to-date.”
Prior to widespread use of vaccines, measles caused 50-75 deaths per year in Canada. Since 1963, when vaccines became available for measles, the number of cases has fallen by over 99% (from about 350,000 per year before 1963 to less than 2,000 per year in 1995.) Measles is just one of many diseases that can be prevented with a safe vaccine, thus avoiding unnecessary complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis,
“Parents can call their local public health team to update their children’s immunizations,” adds Sherlock.
