Students Discover Network of Services and Support Available at Loyalist College

September 16, 2010

This week the Loyalist community came together at the Getting Connected Fair — an event designed to give students the opportunity to gain a clear understanding of all the support mechanisms and services available to them. Representatives of a full range of areas were available to answer questions the students had and to explain how the support systems work to assist them in having a positive, fun and successful Loyalist experience

Some of the college areas represented at the fair included: Employment and Career Services, the Student Success Hub, the International Centre, Disability Services, Counselling and Mind & Wellness, Peer Tutoring, Financial Assistance, Alumni Services, Sustainability at Loyalist and the Aboriginal Resource Centre. Students also had the opportunity to submit resumes for part-time employment opportunities available on campus and within the community

Paul Latchford, Coordinator of Aboriginal Services, feels the fair was an ideal way of showing students that they are not alone when they come to the college but part of an inclusive environment. “We have over 350 Aboriginal students attending Loyalist and it is important that we provide them with a resource that lets them retain and develop their heritage. The fair gave us the opportunity to meet many new students who were not aware of the centre and to encourage them to access the programs and facilities we have available for them.”

Sarah Hawkins is a student in the new post-graduate International Support Worker program and a graduate of the college’s Photojournalism program. “In addition to the support services available at the college, the fair also showed me ways that I can become more involved in campus life — campus recreation plans all kinds of trips and just-for-fun sports activities. It’s a great way to meet new people and feel connected with the college.”

A classmate of Sarah’s, Michelle Newlands, a graduate of the Print and E-Journalism programs, also thought that the fair was a great event for the students, especially those new to the campus. “With all this information available in one location we were able to find out so much within a very short length of time — no need for a campus-wide search for answers. It was all right there. It’s a very effective way to let students know about things that can really make a difference to their success.”
