Television and New Media Production Students Cover National Hockey Tournament

November 13, 2008

On Sunday, November 9, more than 1,800 fans jumped to their feet and cheered when Ontario Red won the National Women’s Under 18 Championship in Napanee, Ontario. Loyalist College’s Television and New Media Production students captured the event on video.  Throughout the five-day tournament the third-year Loyalist students covered 17 games and provided a DVD of each game to the organizers.

Sable Empey was one of the students covering the tournament. “Providing coverage of these hockey games was a great experience for me because it allowed me to work with real clients, as well as learn how fast-paced and exciting filming sports can be. It was also rewarding to know that the players would have a memento of their games and at this level of competition that would mean a lot. Covering this hockey tournament was a great way for us as students to get a feel for using action and creativity in our filming.”

“This was a great opportunity for our third-year students to be part of a truly professional event,” said Cathy Goddard, a Professor in the Television and New Media Production program. “Not only did they gain experience in shooting a high level of hockey, they interacted with many other media professionals which provided them with some valuable perspective.  I had worked in the industry for two years before I got a chance to be part of an event of this magnitude. The educational value is enormous.”
