LOYALIST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT SURPASSES $10 MILLION

May 29, 2017

Belleville, Ontario, May 29, 2017 – At the Annual Meeting of The Loyalist College Foundation on May 25, members learned that the endowed fund for student support had reached a significant milestone of $10.6 million at March 31, 2017.  The endowment stood at $9.2 million at March 31, 2016. Susan Scarborough was re-elected as Foundation Chair and Donna Gowthorpe was elected as Vice-Chair for the upcoming year. The College Board of Governors has appointed Foundation Past Chair Bernie Ouellet as an Honorary Director in recognition of his outstanding service to the College Foundation, including his significant contribution as Co-Chair for The Campaign for Loyalist College.

Margaret Werkhoven and Brian Smith were elected to serve as Community Directors for the next three-year term. Other Community Directors include Kristin Crowe, Catharine Huff, Mark Rollins, and John Sherratt.  Representatives of the College Board of Governors will be confirmed in the Fall.

Ex-officio Directors include College President & CEO, Ann Marie Vaughan; Sr. Vice-President Corporate Services & Chief Financial Officer, Cathy Rushton; and Executive Director of College Advancement & External Relations, Dianne Spencer.

During the year, 350 awards were presented through the Foundation endowment, with a total value of $183,605. In addition to the awards from Foundation accounts, another $356,736 was made available through 176 expendable awards, bringing the total presented to $540,341. This includes $189,870 in tuition credits and bursaries from The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, for The W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowships – an innovative program which is unique to Loyalist College, designed to increase interest and participation in careers in skilled trades.

“We are very appreciative of the support of our many donors, and in particular the generosity of Lanny and Catharine Huff, whose major gift during the year contributed to this wonderful milestone,” said Foundation Chair Susan Scarborough. “Their donation is the largest single gift ever made to the College endowment fund, and it will provide invaluable financial assistance to Loyalist students through the Peter F. Huff Memorial Bursary throughout the future. We are very grateful to the Huff family for their outstanding commitment.”

Chair Scarborough added, “I want to thank all Directors and all of our community donors for the wonderful support of students and programs at Loyalist College during the past year.  As individuals, organizations and employers, you are important partners in the College’s continuing success as it celebrates the start of something amazing during its 50th Anniversary, and looks forward to the amazing decades to come.”

The Loyalist College Foundation was established in 1995 to provide leadership in meeting the goals for long-term development and fundraising to benefit the students and programs at Loyalist College.
