Loyalist College Presents $80,450 in Awards to 104 Students

March 09, 2015

Belleville, Ontario, March 6, 2015 – Loyalist College congratulates 104 students who received awards during the Spring Awards Reception on March 5 in the Student Link Lounge. Made possible by 24 donors, including 20 endowed funds, the awards total $80,450, bringing the total value of awards presented this year through the Awards Office, to more than $533,000.

“We know that these awards make a significant and lasting impact on students,” said Loyalist College President and CEO Maureen Piercy. “Their thank you cards and notes, such as one which our Awards Officer received recently which said, ‘This email brought tears to my eyes.  This truly means the world to me,’ reflect their gratitude, and often, their pleasant surprise at being recognized for their hard work. Many of these awards made available throughout the year are provided by the endowment fund for student financial assistance, which is administered by The Loyalist College Foundation.”

The Honorary Colonel Maureen Piercy Bursary was presented for the first time to two students entering or continuing in full-time programs who are immediate family members of 8 Air Communications and Control Squadron – 8 ACCS – members, a 2 Wing squadron located at CFB Trenton. This year’s recipients were David Hiscock, second-year Fitness and Health Promotion student, and Matthew Moore, second-year Motive Power Fundamentals student.

Also presented was the President’s Recognition Award, conferred to a deserving student in recognition of the outstanding service of College employees during their career. This year’s award, honouring Karen Cullen, retired Executive Director of Human Resources Services & Organizational Development, was presented to Human Resources Management post-graduate student Stephanie Directo.

“We appreciate the work of The Loyalist College Foundation in providing this support for our students,” said Governor June Hagerman of the Loyalist College Board of Governors. “The Board understands the importance of the awards which are being presented today, and we want to thank all donors – individuals and organizations, who have made them possible.”
