Bridges to College for High School Students

June 25, 2009

In July there will be 20 area high school students attending Loyalist. It’s not a summer camp. It’s not a campus tour. They are earning a Loyalist College credit by taking Nail Technology I — a course that is part of the Esthetician program. By successfully completing this course they will receive a high school credit in addition to the college credit. Those who decide to enroll in Loyalist’s diploma Esthetician program can choose to be exempted from this class if they wish. This opportunity has been made possible through the School-College-Work Initiative funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and the Ministry of Education. The mandate of the program is to assist in creating a seamless transition for students from secondary school to college.

“This is a great opportunity for high school students to explore the college and gain a greater understanding of what the program entails before making their post-secondary decision,” said Savanna Morgan, a Recruitment Officer. “It’s so important for students to understand their options and to be aware of all the possibilities that are available to them. The support systems at Loyalist are amazing and we can help students overcome what they perceive as barriers between them and their post-secondary education.”

Melanie Kennedy, Coordinator of the Esthetician program, feels this is a great opportunity for students considering esthetics as a career path. “The two-week course is a wonderful introduction to campus life and esthetics. Initiatives like this ease the transition into post-secondary education by forming a bridge to their careers from high school. We’re very proud of the Esthetician program at Loyalist and are excited to show these students our beautiful Spa facilities, the services available here and the opportunities for their future.”

Lindsay Fothergill, a graduate of Moira Secondary School, is entering the second year of the Esthetician program at Loyalist in September — and is working at the Loyalist Spa this summer. “I think these high school students will love coming to the college and taking this summer course. We have such beautiful facilities here at the college and they will have the opportunity to see the many different areas that our program covers. I’m so glad that I’m able to work here this summer. The additional experience I am gaining working with clients, providing manicures, pedicures, facials, eyelash tinting and artificial nail enhancements, will make me even more comfortable this fall when I return for my second year. This program is so much fun. There is a saying that has become sort of our class mantra  — people may forget what we tell them and the products we recommend, but they will never forget the way that we make them feel. It’s great to be working in a field that brings people such pleasure.”
